Malvani chicken thali is one of the  popular thali in Konkan region of Maharashtra(India) and also some parts of Karnataka. Malvani cuisine is predominantly non-vegetarian, But there are many vegetarian delicacies too. Malvani cuisine has its own distinct way of cooking food. It uses coconut liberally in various forms such as grated, dry grated, fried, coconut paste and coconut milk. Some dishes also use kokum, dried kokam (amsul), tamarind, and raw mango (kairi). There is also one spice powder made using lot’s of spices which is known as Malvani Masala.

Malvani kombadi rassa/sagoti: Chicken cooked in coconut milk with lot’s of spices and freshly grounded spice powder ‘Malvani masala’.



Suka chicken: Chicken cooked in grated fresh coconut with Malvani masala and other herb, spices.


Kombadi vade/Malvani vade: Deep fried rice vade/fritters made using rice flour and daals with some spices.


Sol Kadhi : A pink colored appetizer drink made using kokam fruit and Coconut Milk and flovored with some herb and salt.


Tomorrow is a ‘Gatari Amavasya’ or ‘Ashadh Amavasya’ mostly known as Gatari is a regional festival celebrated especially in Maharashtra and some parts of Goa. On ‘Gatari” day, Maharashtrian people enjoy eating non vegetarian food and drinking and invites the next month “Shravan” with utmost fervour. In Shravan many people gives-up Non-vegetarian food and drinking.
So I am making this thali to enjoy the non-veg and to welcome the ‘Shravan’ month.
