Mukhwas is a after-meal snack or digestive aid widely used as a mouth/breath freshener, especially after meals. In most of the the Indian house you will find this homemade mouth freshener which is easy to make and healthy. It can be made with various seeds like Fennel seeds, carom seeds, sesame seeds, nuts like pumpkin seeds, essential oils such as peppermint oil to make it more aromatic, coconut and sugar to make it sweet. Fennel seeds are a good source of vitamin C,sesame seeds are rich in calcium and a well known galactogogue, It can be eaten as medicinal purpose. In India, it is also consumed by a breast feeding mother to help them to digest the food, increase the milk and beat the acidity and constipation. In market we find many variety of candy coated, sweet mukhwas but nothing beats the taste of homemade mouth freshener.

1/2 Cup Fennel seeds
3 Tbsp Sesame seeds
1/4th cup Carom seeds
2 Tbsp Dhana daal/dhaniya dal (optional)
1- 1 1/4 Tsp Black salt (depending on the taste you like)
1-2 Tsp water
Check all ingredient for any stone or impurity. On low flame roast all the ingredient one by one till they turn pink. Once everything is roasted, In the same pan mix all ingredient while the heat is on low. Now sprinkle some water(at this stage you have to move faster), sprinkle black salt all over it and mix until everything is coated with black salt and water, at first it will look wet and the seeds will be little soft, but don’t worry and keep stirring till water evaporates. Roast for 3-4 minutes or till you feel all the water evaporated and the roasted seeds are crunchy(you can taste and feel the crunchiness. Though it will be little soft(not too soft), once it’s cooled it will become crunchy).
